living amends

Living amends, in this event, can include making changes to the behaviors contributing to the falling out between the survivor and the person they owed an apology to. For example, let’s say a mother didn’t make an effort to escort her children to the school bus stop. One of her children is killed crossing the street on their own even after telling their mother that they were afraid to cross the busy street alone. A living amend might include a posthumous promise to the deceased child to, from now on, make it a point to walk their surviving siblings to the bus stop each day. Many individuals know that they need to apologize to someone they love but fail to do so out of pride or ego.

The Importance of Sober Living Outside of Treatment

As a result, the opportunity is lost to make things right if that person dies before they can apologize. Undoubtedly, you, too, have a list of ways in which you want to live out your living amends, and that’s great! The more personalized your lifestyle changes are, the more they’re going to resonate and stick with you. My name is Mackenzie Wilson, and I was granted a Living Amends scholarship I’ve used to help fund my stay at my sober living house. I cannot begin to express what your help has done for me, even just a month in.

My dad’s friend Whitney Welch from https://ecosoberhouse.com/ decided to scholarship me into sober living. That was 255 days ago—eight months of sobriety from a guy who couldn’t get eight days. So far, sober living has taught me how to pay bills, be accountable for my actions, how to be a member of a community, and to be the best sober gentlemen I can be. If I hadn’t received help along this journey, I wouldn’t have succeeded.

Who Is an Ideal Applicant for the Living Amends Scholarship Program?

Recovery is a life-long process, and every little change you make counts. I cannot go back and change the past, but I can take responsibility for my actions. Each day I ask living amends my Higher Power for the strength to help me stay sober and live responsibly and with honesty. State how you are taking personal responsibility for the hurt you’ve caused.
